Slovakia English Camp 2002
I had the privilege of teaching English in Slovakia a second summer. Here are some photos of the highlights.

Over 300 students
The students were 7 - 15 years old. They were divided into younger and older groups for the opening session and 24 different classes according to age and English level. |
Line dancing
The Slovak coordinators requested a Country and Western day. We brought some western clothes and learned line dancing so we could teach the students.

My class
My class consisted of beginner and intermediate English level, 11-13 year olds. They were a great group. |
My interpreter
Only 15 years old, but she has very good English fluency. She was a big help.

Using TPR
Total Physical Response (TPR), by James Asher, is a fun and effective way to teach English. The students listen to English commands and watch the teacher in action. Later the students follow the commands. Eventually the students give the commands to one another. |
Student photos and questionnaires
It was helpful to display the students' photos and questionnaires on the bulletin board.

English written work
The students are working hard on their English writing. Most of our time, however, was spent on conversational English. |
The puppets speak English!
One of the afternoon activities was a puppet class. I trained the students in professional puppet techniques with English songs and skits. They had four puppet shows for parents, the community, and other students.

Musical
Another afternoon activity was practicing for a musical for the community. Drama, puppets, and singing (all in English) were prepared. |
|
"Standing room only" at musical
The community theater is packed for the children's English musical. A Slovak translation on an overhead screen is provided for the parents and community members. The local newspaper reports on this event.
